The suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been arrested for the fourth time, along with four co-accused have been arrested in connection with the 2022 murder of Emmanuel Mbense.
Investigators allege Mbense was tortured to death in 2022 by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the EMPD and private civilians before his body was dumped at Spaarwater Dam in Duduza, Nigel, Ekurhuleni.
The case drew national attention after explosive testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry allegedly linked law enforcement officials to Mbense’s killing.
Authorities further allege Mbense became a suspect in a business robbery in Boksburg North, prompting a police raid on his home on April 14, 2022.
Mkhwanazi was arrested in April and twice in July.
He faces an array of charges, including fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice. He was also arrested in connection with the blue light scandal and the R14,9million Killarney precious stones heist.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on 6 August.
