Inkomoko: Supporting Refugee Entrepreneurs Across East Africa

Business as a Path to Dignity

Inkomoko, a Rwandan social enterprise, is transforming refugee camps into entrepreneurial hubs. By providing business training, low-interest loans, and mentorships, Inkomoko helps refugees and vulnerable communities build profitable microenterprises and grain financial independence.

From Kigali to the Camps

Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Kigali, Inkomoko now operates in Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. Its model focuses on refugee camps, urban informal settlements, and rural host communities, places often overlooked by traditional lenders and programs.

Results That Speak for Themselves

To date, Inkomoko has worked with over 50,000 entrepreneurs, disbursed over $10 million in loans, and helped launch or grow more than 20,000 small businesses. Nearly 70% of its clients are women, and 40% are refugees.
The repayment rate for loans is an impressive 96%, proving that the underserved population can thrive when given the right tools.

Scaling with Strategic Partnerships

Inkomoko partners with the UNHCR, Mastercard Foundation, and the IKEA Foundation to expand its programs. In 2025, it launched a digital training program to reach refugees with smartphones, offering modules in multiple local languages.

Resilience Through Entrepreneurship

Inkomoko’s impact goes far beyond income. It builds hope, and social cohesion, and long-term resilience, showing that investing in displaced people isn’t charity; it’s smart development.
