Ex-SA U18 Rugby star, Luqobo Makwendini dies after training in France

The former South African Under-18 rugby star, Luqobo ‘Bibo’ Makwendini has tragically passed away in France.

In a sad turn of events, the 20-year-old, Béziers tighthead prop, suffered a cardiac arrest during a training session at the Stade de la Gayonne on Friday morning.

According to the reports, Makwendini became unwell at the end of the morning session at the Stade de la Gayonne, emergency services responded quickly and Makwedini was rushed to the local hospital and despite their efforts, he did not make it.

His death has sent shockwaves through the rugby community, not least among his teammates and coaches at his current club, Béziers, where he had joined the academy ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Renowned for his skill on the field, Makwedini had been regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects, promising to make a significant impact in the upcoming season. He also represented the South African U18 team, further showcasing his potential. His talents had led him to Béziers after a successful youth career, and the anticipation surrounding his future was palpable.

Club President and former Springbok Captain Bob Skinstad expressed deep sorrow in a heartfelt statement released to the media: ‘It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the tragic passing of our young player, Luqobo (Bibo) Makwendini, at the age of 20.”

“Luqobo joined our training centre during the off-season and quickly became a valued member of the Red and Blue family. His commitment, kindness, and personal qualities deeply impressed everyone at the club,” he added.

“Today, the entire Red and Blue family is united in mourning and deeply shaken by this heartbreaking loss.”

Skinstad also emphasised that during this difficult period, the club would extend its support to Makwedini’s family and teammates as they grieve.

‘AS Béziers Hérault stands with his loved ones and offers them its full support. We respectfully request that the club, our players, and Bibo’s loved ones be given the time and privacy they need to grieve during this extremely difficult period. As a club, we are deeply saddened by his passing.”
