The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa declared that the date for South Africa’s Local Elections will be on 4 November 2026.
Hlabisa made the announcement today and he stated that eligible voters now have until midnight tonight to register to vote on 4 November 2026 polls.
The proclamation formally sets the date for voters to elect municipal councils across the country, marking the start of the final stages of preparations for the polls.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has been preparing for the elections, with voter registration activities already completed ahead of the country’s municipal vote.
According to the latest IEC figures, it show that more than 29 million people have registered to cast their votes.
The 2026 Local Government Elections will determine councillors and municipal leadership structures for the next five-year term.
The IEC has previously reminded eligible voters to ensure that they are registered where they live, as voters can only vote at the voting station linked to their registration details.
The election proclamation triggers key legal processes, including the closure of the voters’ roll in accordance with the Electoral Act and the finalisation of election preparations.
The IEC is expected to continue with logistical preparations, including finalising voting stations, training electoral staff and ensuring readiness for election day.
