George Matlou secures a long-term deal with Stellenbosch FC

Stellenbosch FC made an announcement on Tuesday, 14 July that George Matlou has officially signed a long-term contract with the club.

This is a fresh start for the 27-year-old midfielder, over his tenure, he made 46 total appearances, providing three assists and scoring no goals. Matlou’s contract at Kaizer Chiefs was not renewed after spending four years at Naturena, where he won the Nedbank Cup in 2025.

His 2025/26 season was cut short after just six appearances across all competitions, ending prematurely when he underwent knee surgery following a CAF Confederation Cup match against Zamalek SC in February.

Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie said he believes Matlou’s experience will prove important for Chiefs.

“George is a player we believe can add real value to our squad through his experience, technical ability, and understanding of the game.”

“Matlou joins the likes of Thabiso Lebitso as part of Gavin Hunt’s new-look Stellenbosch side ahead of the new season. Matlou, who most recently plied his trade with Kaizer Chiefs, has penned a long-term contract with Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2026-27 season.”

“George is a player we believe can add real value to our squad through his experience, technical ability, and understanding of the game,” Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie said.

“His pedigree speaks for itself, and we are naturally pleased that he has chosen to continue his career with Stellenbosch FC. We believe he can play an important role in helping us achieve our objectives this season.”
