Feroz Khan shot days before his scheduled testimony at the Public Inquiry

Senior South African Police Officer and Crime Intelligence head, Major-General Feroz Khan was shot by two unidentified suspects on Sunday, 28 June in Houghton while he was driving home.

Prior to the shooting, Khan’s name was mentioned several times during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating accusations that a drug cartel has infiltrated the state, and he was summoned to testify before it on Wednesday, 1 July.

South African Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said that the police are investigating Khan’s shooting.

“It is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or to conclude that the incident is linked to his anticipated appearance before the [inquiry],” she said.

Khan’s lawyers raised concerns about his safety and has asked for permission to testify in-camera.

The Commission says it will confirm the next witness once the Khan matter has been addressed.

It remains unclear when he will be able to give evidence.
